FAQ

What is the benefit of synthetic grass over a hard court surface?

  • Synthetic grass is a  better looking surface that fits the natural surroundings.
  • It is an all weather surface that allows play straight after rain.
  • Grass is much easier on players’ ankle, knee and hip joints.
  • Longer lasting – up to 20 years in a private residence.
  • Low maintenance (clean surface of leaves and spray once a year).

What base do I need for a synthetic grass court?  Either concrete or asphalt are the preferred base options.  Depending on the stability of the sub base and depth of the basecourse, we recommend a minimum 100mm reinforced slab with a 1% fall across the surface.  The concrete can be fibre reinforced or include 668 mesh in 20mpa concrete.

What tennis court dimensions do you recommend?  In a private residence 34m x 16m, up to a maximum of 36m x 18m. Inner city sites can be smaller depending on the space available.  Actual playing area is 23.78m x 10.97m.

What is the best orientation for my court? North to slightly North-East.

What surface should I choose?  Our standard private residence surface is Satellite.  This 19mm surface offers a good economical option that will not be exposed to high intensive use.  Satellite Plus and Protour both offer a higher density per sqm, this provides a longer lasting surface but performance will be very similar. The higher density of yarn will also provide a slightly better looking surface with the appearance of less sand.

What is the “Protour” surface?  This is our top of the line club surface manufactured at 15mm pile height.  This surface is manufactured on a different machine from the 19mm surfaces and has an additional 20% more yarn.  The additional yarn provides a “carpet” like surface with 20% less sand and therefore a better looking finished court.

What colours are available? Buffalo Green, Olive, Terracotta and Blue.

Where does the product come from?  The grass is manufactured in Sydney and the raw materials come from Holland and Scotland.

Do you provide a warranty? Yes, 7 years against any premature breakdown of the yarn due to UV rays and 24 months on installation workmanship on-site.

Do you glue the court to the concrete or asphalt base?  No, the court surface is loose laid over the base with all seams taped and glued.  The sand infill holds the court in place – there is approximately 10-12 tonne of sand per court.  In areas where the court is exposed to high winds, the edge of the court should be glued to the base.

How long does the turf last – what is the warranty?  The actual life expectancy is 15-25 years with a limited 7-year factory warranty.

Does the turf drain like regular turf or soil?  The drainage is very similar to natural turf.  The turf backing has plenty of perforated holes allowing for water to drain vertically.  The infill acts as a filter also.

What maintenance is required for the turf?  Spraying for moss and algae needs to be completed every 6 months plus specialist cleaning and grooming of the sand to keep it clean, loose and free draining.

Will the turf fade?  No, the fibres have a UV protection coating and can withstand the effects of sun, heat, wind, snow, and ice

Is the turf safe for our children to play on?  Research shows children have fewer injuries when playing on artificial turf compared to other ground covers. We have turf installed at numerous schools and childcare centers. Our turf meets all requirements for safety…

Is the proplay system for playgrounds an economical option?  The proplay pad and turf provides one of the most cost effective solutions on the market, in particular for the higher fall height areas of a playground.

Will our pet damage the turf?  No your pet will not damage your synthetic turf, the turf fibres are very strong and can withstand play and use from cats and dogs.

Can weeds grow through the turf?  Periodically a weed will try to come up, most commonly on the edges near concrete. It is possible to see one come up in a drain hole. If that happens pull up the weed and spray the area with a little weed killer, it will stop the weed from coming up again and won’t harm the turf.

Does the turf need to be re-sanded?  No, the turf is installed with the correct volume of sand.

What happens if the turf is damaged (fireworks etc)?  The affected area can be cut out and replaced very easily.

Tennis Court Surfaces

At TEAM Sports Surfaces we understand that a new tennis court surface adds value to your home or club. Our aim is to provide a range of high quality surfaces that you “want” to play on resulting in years of personal enjoyment for all players from the novice to interclub players. We offer a comprehensive product range for all standards of play, from the popular 19mm polypropylene surface through to a 12mm polyethylene surface, we have a product to meet your needs.

TEAM Sports Surfaces tennis courts are made-to-order with integrated line marking in kit format to reduce seaming and are designed to allow play on the fibre tips, not the sand infill. Our tennis court surfaces require a settling in period during which the sand should compact below the top of the yarn blade and should be maintained at that level for the life of the court.

TEAM Sports offers a start to finish project management service including base construction, court surfacing, fencing, tennis net/posts and lighting. In all cases it is essential to ensure that the sub-base on which the synthetic grass is to be laid is of good standard, this is usually concrete but can be asphalt or a crushed rock alternative.

Being a flexible product synthetic grass will reflect any deficiencies in the sub-base, therefore it’s essential to get our specialists to construct a suitable base or repair an old base prior to installation of your new artificial turf surface. The sub-base should be properly compacted and adequately drained. For tennis courts the sub-base should have a slope of 1% in any one single plain, preferably from side to side.

TEAM Sports also offer:

  • Tennis court fencing- either galvanised, black or green
  • Tennis net posts- Steel or aluminum, galvanised or black, fixed or mobile
  • Tennis Net- ¾ drop or full drop, standard or championship quality
  • Lighting- custom designed to meet your site requirements, inner city or rural
  • Leaf sweeper- to keep your surface clean and free of organic matter
  • Maintenance service- ongoing service to keep your court in great condition

Hockey Surfaces

TEAM Sports is proud to be considered a leading supplier of hockey fields in Australia and has now extended our offering to the New Zealand hockey community. Due to long term relationships with our raw material suppliers, we continue to work on product development that allows us to ensure long-term success for our hockey customers.

We have an innovative range of FIH approved hockey surfaces to suit the requirements of our clients, varying from ‘wet’ fields to sand dressed surfaces with in-situ laid shock absorbance pads. Our sand, water and waterless/dry based systems have been tested and receive accreditation by the FIH (Federation International Hockey).

TEAM Sports FIH approved synthetic hockey surfaces:

  1. TEAM Aquaturf – GLOBAL (WET & DRY)
  2. Aquaturf Evolution – GLOBAL (WET & DRY)
  3. Aquaturf SL – GLOBAL (WET/DRY)
  4. Aquaturf XL – GLOBAL (WET)

TEAM Sports performance objectives include the highest levels of player enjoyment, safety, comfort, durability and extended use in adverse weather conditions. Hockey fields demand the most in terms of absolute perfection in installation, and it is our commitment to excellence in this area that allows us to maintain our premier status amongst the Hockey fraternity.

Aquaturf Evolution – pile height 12mm

Evolution is the latest synthetic hockey surface developed by TEAM Sports to achieve Class One, Global pitch rating when either WET or DRY. Evolving from our successful Aquaturf SL (sand dressed) synthetic hockey surface.

Launched in 2005, Aquaturf Evolution is designed using a polyethelene yarn with it’s own unique polymer formulation and fibrillation pattern to improve playability and increase durability whilst offering improved ball roll, friction and turf abrasion when played on in a dry state.

Aquaturf SL – pile height 20mm

Aquaturf Sl was first developed in 2005 when FIH began its’ investigations into the possibility of a water-free synthetic turf for top level hockey.

Research and development in yarn construction lead to the manufacture of polyethylene  ‘springlock’ technology; which combines to provide a cost effective, environmentally friendly surface solution suitable for play in WET or DRY conditions.

Aquaturf SL is ‘the’ versatile product; ideal for multi-sport applications for those clubs looking to increase their revenue.

Playground Safety Surfacing

TEAM Sports Surfaces has an innovative and environmentally friendly solution for your safety fall height requirements in council playgrounds, schools and childcare centres. The underlying ‘Proplay’ pad is constructed from tiny pieces of recycled foam bonded together to form a soft but free draining porous pad. This pad combined with a surfacing layer of TEAM synthetic grass provides a safe, soft, clean and dry playing surface all year round.

Re-tested in October 2011, our safety fall height systems for playgrounds meet the NZS5828:2004 for free heights of fall up to a critical fall height of 3.3m

ProPlay normally consists of one, but sometimes two layers, depending on the degree of impact absorption required. The Proplay pad is then covered by a synthetic grass carpet of your choice allowing a combination of different colours and textures to suit your environment. ProPlay can be laid onto most types of bases and will follow the contours of that base without cracking or damage.

The use of ProPlay increases the drainage capability of any installation allowing children to continue to play in light rain, and even after heavy rain showers as no water remains in the playground. The open cell construction of the mat allows water to pass easily and readily between the closed cell flakes, giving the ProPlay mat super drainage performance without absorbing any water. No more slippery surfaces or areas holding water, just a dry and safe surface for all kids.

Benefits of Proplay and TEAM synthetic grass:

  • Optimum impact absorption
  • Durable
  • Highly permeable
  • Easy and quick installation
  • Range of colours available
  • Environment friendly
  • Improved surface feel under foot
  • No freezing or icing over of surface
  • Consistent performance all year round
  • Quality controlled factory production
  • Low maintenance

Rugby Pitch Surfaces

New Zealander’s have a real passion for rugby starting at junior club games on cold and wet Saturday mornings to watching the All Blacks. TEAM Sports IRB approved artificial turf surfaces can play a major role in the growth of rugby in New Zealand. No more ‘fields closed’ signs, no more cancelled trainings and games, just dry and consistent surfaces all year round making for entertaining running rugby. Synthetic turf surfaces allow for around 4 times the use of a natural grass field providing clubs and associations with facilities to cater for a greater number of teams and players.

After installing the world’s first dedicated rugby field in 2000 at the Runaway Bay Super Sports in Australia, TEAM Sports has continued the development of this 3rd Generation grass technology in accordance with the IRB regulation 22. In 2007 TEAM Sports Surfaces installed the first New Zealand synthetic rugby surface to IRB standard at Auckland’s College Rifles Rugby Club. This new surface has gained acceptance from the players and now provides unlimited use for the increasing number of teams at the club.

“Our synthetic rugby fields are extremely hard wearing and provide a consistent playing surface in all weather conditions. Our rugby pitch with synthetic turf is one of the best things that we have at the centre. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from people who have used the pitch. At first people don’t realize that it is synthetic, they just think that we keep the grass really healthy. Everything revolves around the field, it is the focal point to what we do”

Nick Pye, Managing director – Sports Super Center – Runaway Bay, Queensland, Australia.
